Value is the most important element in a successful painting. This course is designed to give beginners hands on experience with establishing value using the medium of acrylic paint. Students who take this course will produce a black and white master copy using a systematic, controlled process. The structured nature of this course will ensure that even the most beginning student is poised for success. Students: ages 15+ and no experience
Each student will choose a master copy image to make a tonal replica of. These images will be provided by the instructor. There will be at least one portrait, one landscape and one abstract source to choose from. Before lunch, the instructor step the class through the initial drawing transfer phase. Once the drawing is transferred, students will watch a painting demonstration. After lunch, the class will paint in the main value pattern of the image referencing the strategies outlined in the demo. When the value pattern of the image is fully established students will be instructed how to address the detail areas of the image.
About Felice House:
Felice House is an accomplished figurative painter who strives, through her portraits of women, to provide a counterpoint to the passive representations found in art historical tradition. Her subjects are beautiful and observable, but they are not consumable.
Felice comes from a long line of artists. Her grandmother is an award winning Vermont weaver, her mother is a painter and her father has worked in computer graphics since its inception. When she walked into her first oil painting class at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1998, holding a box of her mother’s old paints, she felt like she had come home. She knew just what to do.
She received a B.F.A from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2000, an M.S. in computer graphics from the Visualization Laboratory at Texas A&M University in 2006 and an MFA in painting from the University of Texas in 2011. In between her other schooling, Felice spent time studying classical painting and portraiture at the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore, MD.
She has received numerous fellowships and scholarships and enjoyed a residency at the Vermont Studio center in Johnson, Vermont. Felice’s work is owned and enjoyed by a long list of public and private collectors including the Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago. In 2011 she was commissioned by the Austin City Limits Music Festival to create their tenth anniversary commemorative poster. Felice has been featured in shows across Canada, the North East Coast and Texas. She is an Assistant Professor in the Visualization Department at Texas A&M University.
Felice is one of the fourteen women artists in the upcoming Women Painting Women: Texas exhibit at the Georgetown Art Center. Click here to learn more about the exhibit.
